Palliation aims to relieve the symptoms of the disease without necessarily altering the course of the disease or prolonging life. The key is to achieve good quality of life. Palliative treatments continue to improve; amongst these are insertion of metal stents (tubes) which force open the blockage in the gullet. Stents remain in place for many months and can be replaced if necessary. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy can play a major role in palliation.
Outlook
The prognosis for oesophageal cancer formerly has been very poor, with few patients expected to live over five years. However, it may be that the tide is turning, particularly with the use of complex combinations of treatment. Furthermore, the standard of palliation of symptoms, together with the support for patients and their families is improving dramatically.
